The Village of Tinley Park is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill the management position of Deputy Police Chief This is an exciting leadership opportunity to help shape the future of the Tinley Park Police Department through innovate community-oriented policing strategies, technology advancements and data analytics, and with a strong focus on accountability and oversight.  The Tinley Park Police Department is comprised of 4 Operational Divisions: Administration, Patrol, Investigations, Special Programs and has more than 150 employees, including 91 full-time, sworn positions.  The police department also is responsible for Crime Prevention, the Crime Free Rental Housing Program, National Night Out and the Citizen’s Police Academy.  Learn more about the Tinley Park Police Department.

The Deputy Police Chief will perform management-level supervisory law enforcement work, organizing and directing the administrative and operational activities of the Tinley Park Police Department.  This leadership position will plan and administer patrol, traffic, tactical unit, and special units to include SSERT, ILEAS, Major Crime Task Forces for Will and Cook Counties, animal control, special events, community service officers, crime prevention, and investigative services.  This leadership position will also direct, coordinate and supervise the administrative, personnel, training, budgetary, purchase requisition and records management functions of the police department.  In the absence of the Police Chief, this position will assume command of the Police Department. In the absence of the Police Chief, this position will assume command of the Police Department. 

The Deputy Police Chief will assist the Police Chief in the development of department-wide goals and objectives and in designing and implementing appropriate plans to meet established goals and assist subordinate officers and civilians in developing and meeting appropriate goals and objectives for each unit.   This position will develop, secure the approval of, and administer long-term and short-term capital and operating budgets, implement appropriate methods to monitor adherence to budget and resolve variances, and coordinate all department-related grants.  Additionally, will maintain and enhances the department's public relations efforts through contacts with civic organizations, Community Action Programs, businesses, school, community groups, village residents, and media representatives.

The Deputy Police Chief will monitor demands for service while adjusting resource deployment, plan and administer the effective management and delivery of quality support services for the Tinley Park Police Department and promote continuous improvements in methods of police administration by revising and developing work standards, implementing appropriate corrective actions to resolve problems, and ensuring adherence to quality assurance programs.  This position will plan, assign, review, and evaluate the work of subordinate supervisors, ensuring adherence to rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, Administer the patrol officer discipline process, manage internal investigations, and make recommendations for discipline of patrol officers and police civilian staff ensuring compliance with established collective bargaining, general orders, and personnel policies.

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice, political science, business or public administration, or a related field is required.  Master's Degree is preferred.  Graduation from the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, or Southern Police Institute is preferred.  Basic certification from the Illinois Local Governmental Police Training Board as "police officer" or equivalency.   Must maintain federal, state, and local requirements to carry a firearm.   Must possess a valid driver's license.

A minimum of ten (10 years) as a full-time sworn officer with progressively increasing responsibility in law enforcement experience and/or rank along with a minimum of five (5) years of supervisory, managerial, and/or senior level law enforcement experience.    Prior experience working with unions and handling internal investigations is required.  Prior media experience highly preferred.  Microsoft Office proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel and ability to use different software programs is required.
